Q.Tell us about your first job. Jon Andrews, deputy estates manager at Stoke Mandeville Hospital
Joined Sodexo: 2014

Lives in: Redruth, Cornwall

Q.Tell us about your first job.

A. I was a Royal Air Force electronics technician for 23 years.

Q.How about your Sodexo role, and a typical day?

A. I oversee the day-to-day management of our engineers who deliver planned and reactive maintenance activities throughout the hospital. I am responsible for this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I also deal with maintaining compliance with all HTMs and industry standards, as well as health and safety policies.

Q. Do you enjoy and if so, why?

A. Yes I really enjoy the job, it’s very challenging and diverse.

Q. What skills do you need for your role?

A. Man management, as well as people and technical skills. Oh, and don’t forget patience and a sense of humour!

Q. Tell us about your greatest achievement at work so far.

A. I temporarily took over as estates manager with very limited experience, after only being with the company for two months. I managed the site for six months until a new contracts manager was found. My feedback from the SPV, Healthcare director and various senior Sodexo personnel was really positive.

Q. The Hard FM team used to report to a different part of Sodexo, so the hospital’s NHS staff had two points of contact. Now FM is part of Healthcare, has this improved the system?

A. The amalgamation of hard and soft services has vastly improved the working relationship and communication between our two services. It used to be a case of ‘us and them’, which sometimes caused problems. Now we are working together to provide better service delivery to our clients.

Q. How would you describe Sodexo as an employer?

A. I have only been with Sodexo for a year but from what I have experienced so far, it’s all been positive.

Q.Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

A. Stephen Hawking. Despite being wheelchair bound by a crippling disease and without a voice box, he hasn’t let these hurdles hold him back and has become one of the greatest scientific minds of all time.

Q. If you could pick any other job what would it be?

A. I’d be a MotoGP rider.

Q. What would be your perfect day off?

A. A nice sunny day with my wife and kids at a motorcycle race.

Q. What cant you live without?

A. Oxygen… only kidding! My wife, kids and my motorbike.

Q. Name your fantasy celebrity dinner guest.

A. Kate Beckinsale… it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out why (please don’t tell my wife!)
