A week of celebrations of the Armed Forces has begun!
On Monday 25 June the Armed Forces Day flag was raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country, with a chance to recognise our Reserve Forces on Wednesday 27 June and finishing with Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June.
Sodexo’s long history of support
At Sodexo, we have a long history of working with the British military, spanning over 30 years. Here are some of the ways we look to make a positive difference.
Strong policies to support Reservists
We are committed to being flexible in granting leave to enable employees to train with the Reserve Forces. When circumstances allow, we grant up to two weeks’ additional unpaid leave per holiday year for annual training commitment or to support the regular Armed Forces. We consider granting additional unpaid leave to help Reservists support the regular Armed Forces for anything up to six months for humanitarian operations and may also grant a period of paid family leave to be taken before Reservists return to work from being mobilised. We are, of course, also committed to keeping jobs open for employees if they are mobilised.
Positive recruitment of ex-military personnel
We actively recruit ex-services personnel to help with transition into civilian life. For example, those applying for jobs with us who meet the ideal criteria for the role advertised are guaranteed to progress to the selection process. In our Public Service Pledge, as part of our commitment to the Armed Forces, we have pledged to employ 200 ex-service personnel by the end of 2018.
Helping military families
We recognise that regular postings associated with military careers can cause big disruptions to family life. We aim to minimise these kinds of disruptions by providing employment opportunities for the spouses of service personnel who are posted into areas where we have contracts.
Support for Armed Forces charities
We are proud to support a number of service charities, in particular SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity where we’ve helped look after some of their homes at no cost. Our 14-year-old partnership with them has included volunteering as well as fundraising. This year, we are sponsoring SSAFA’s Big Brew Up fundraising event for the sixth year running. Our recent Ride220 cycling challenge has been in aid of SSAFA and there are many other employee initiatives for SSAFA taking place including sponsorship of the SSAFA Young Achiever’s Award in Cyprus. Through the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, we also fund SSAFA’s homelessness fund.
Recognition for our support to the Armed Forces
We were an early signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant – this initiative commends employers who actively support the Armed Forces community in their workplace and encourages others to follow their lead. In August 2017, we received the Gold Employer Recognition Award, the highest badge of honour from the Ministry of Defence, in relation to our commitment and support to the UK Armed Forces Community. And just last month, our team in Cyprus had the honour of attending the Commander British Forces (CBF) Cyprus Awards Ceremony.

• Uniform to Work Day
If you are a Reservist, then we’re actively encouraging you all to take part in Uniform to Work Day and wear your uniform in civilian life.
