Last month, the Sodexo Corporate Services team at medical technology company Stryker in Belfast were presented with the 2018 WasteLESS Week trophy.
WasteLESS Week is a five-day campaign that Sodexo teams run during October at client sites around the world. In the UK and Ireland, the focus was plastic reduction. Over 12 billion tonnes of plastic waste will be in landfills or the natural environment by 2050. This is one of the reasons why Sodexo believes that less waste means increased quality of life and therefore reducing waste is one of our key Better Tomorrow 2025 commitments.
Business manager Pamela Millar, headed up the Belfast team’s campaign and is passionate about reducing waste and promoting sustainable business practices.
Ahead of the annual WasteLESS Week, Pamela presented client Stryker with proposals to introduce a reusable take-away coffee cups for each of the client’s Belfast employees, as well as new ceramic mugs for visitors. The client team shared Pamela’s passion and were happy to support the cup change proposals.

Supporting Pamela’s vision, the client issued re-useable cups to all on site staff and banned plastic cups. This has created not just a significant environmental benefit, but a cost saving in cups. The site team has also removed other single use plastics, such as polystyrene take away boxes, replacing them with recyclable materials.
During WasteLESS Week, the site team also held a fun pumpkin carving and cooking competition for the client’s employees, which delivered an additional educational message about food waste. Pamela also contacted Belfast City Council, who we were more than happy to support throughout the week with educational resources about managing waste at home getting the message out of the workplace.
Pamela’s advice to other Sodexo managers who share this passion is, “Be confident to discuss this with your client and share Sodexo’s resources. We presented Stryker with a practical solution to reducing waste on site and they were delighted to partner with us on it. We’ve had a great response from everyone onsite and hope to continue this work in the future.”
Well done to Pamela and the rest of the Belfast team for your efforts and thank you to everyone who participated in last year’s WasteLESS Week. Could your site be the 2019 winner? Get involved with WasteLESS Week here.
Special mention to Emmanuel School and Eli Lilly Kinsale Cork for being shortlisted for the 2018 WasteLESS Week trophy.
