Celebrating our Reservists

Celebrating our Reservists

Time 415 days ago Comments 0 comments

Reservists give up their spare time to serve in the Armed Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career, to ensure that, should their country require them, they would be trained and ready to serve as part of the military.

Reservists make up approximately one sixth of the UK Armed Forces and, as such, are integral to protecting the nation’s security at home and overseas.

As well as actively recruiting ex-service personnel and current Reservists, Sodexo encourages employees to seek out Reserve service opportunities. And, colleagues are given time off to complete any training, and supported throughout their service.

Colin Barber is a quality, safety and environment manager, currently supporting the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) integrator contract within our Government & Agencies segment. Colin joined Sodexo in 2008, initially working at HMP Addiewell, before progressing through Corporate Services in a variety of roles with ever increasing responsibilities. In addition to a distinguished career with Sodexo, Colin is also a proud Reservist, saying: “In addition to my roles with Sodexo, I’ve been able to enjoy a 30-year career as a British Army Reservist with 167 Catering Support Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps.

“As a Reservist combat chef, I’m committed to a minimum of 21 days a year, but in order to support the British Armed Forces as required all over the world, a 15-day camp must also be completed within that allocation.”

Colin has been able to travel the world as part of his service as a Reservist: “Some of the more interesting places I’ve been posted include: Norway, Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Kuwait and Iraq. Without Sodexo’s ongoing support for my Army Reserve service, I would have really struggled to justify having a fairly demanding civilian job whilst still achieving a good work-life balance. So, for that, I consider myself extremely fortunate, and proud to be able to wear the uniform of the British Army - and I’m extremely grateful to Sodexo for their continued support.“

As part of our ongoing commitment to our Armed Forces, we are setting up a Veterans and Reservists employee network, and want to hear from Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, and Veterans in the business who are keen to get involved - please click here to submit your details, and tell us what you want from your network.
