A hostel for the homeless has been given a much needed makeover thanks to a group of Sodexo volunteers.
The Food Platform team – part of the business’ Service Operations function –spent a day at North Herts Sanctuary in Hitchin on 24 April, donned in their overalls and armed with paintbrushes.
The Sanctuary is a night hostel, providing temporary accommodation for homeless people. Residents are entitled to a hot evening meal, breakfast and a packed lunch. Stevenage Haven run the day to day operational services, and also provide support to address the social and health needs of users in order for them to ‘move on’ to permanent accommodation.
“The charity is always grateful for any time volunteers can provide to help to support users of the hostel,” said Food Platform’s Moira Smith. “So my colleague Alex Owen contacted them and offered our services. It was clear they needed some help redecorating so the team went along and gave four rooms a fresh lick of paint. We provided the paint, equipment and man-power for the day and cleared up afterwards. Everyone involved agreed that it was a fantastic effort and a job worth doing.”
The team will be getting involved with similar projects later in the year, and hope to encourage others from the Food Platform to join in too.

An hour of fun and games on Stop Hunger Day raised £282.15
