The male and female occupants of HMP YOI Peterborough have put their practical skills training to good use by raising more than £6,000 for charity.
Wooden furniture manufactured from scrap pallets, decorations made from obsolete books, along with plants nurtured in the prison’s gardens are just some of the items that have been sold in various outlets to raise funds for good causes.
Residents of the prison handcraft the goods as part of their workshop education sessions run by Sodexo which enable them to learn practical skills and work towards recognised qualifications. The products are sold under the Jail Birds and Gaol Craft brands with all proceeds going to charity.
This year HMP YOI Peterborough has donated:
£1,500 to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice supporting their palliative care work
£2,100 to Hope into Action who provide accommodation for residents on release
£2,500 to Stop Hunger, Sodexo's charity tackling poor nutrition in communities.
