If you're feeling worried and anxious about money, you're not alone. Financial worries are the biggest cause of stress for millions of adults, which can have a significant effect on our health, relationships, productivity and happiness.
Sometimes taking stock and using the right tools to look at your 'life admin' tasks can provide some surprising results, so here, Make Yourself at Home provides a few tips that can help you with your financial wellbeing.
We all know that planning for the future and being pro-active in your management of money matters is always better than reacting to a sudden change in events. But we also know that it's easier said than done. However, Sodexo's pensions partner, Legal and General, has a huge amount of advice available at your fingertips to get you more future focused:
Learn to control your day-to-day money - learn about the small steps you can take to get back on track, or generally feel more in control.
Prepare for the unexpected - unplanned life events can have a longer-term impact on your financial and mental wellbeing. Preparing in advance can help you manage these shocks.
Plan for your future - whatever your dreams you need a plan to get there. These planned for life events can seem like an impossible dream, but breaking it all down into smaller manageable steps can make it feel easier and you’ll have milestones to celebrate along the way.
The advice is free, and open to all colleagues. Access the full L&G financial wellbeing hub here, and share the resource with your colleagues in your next catch-up. You never know who might be struggling.
Get spending-savvy and save
Through our new Reward Hub, you can discover a range of benefits and discounts to help you through life's everyday spending, as well as the bigger decisions that come along. You'll find the range of benefits available to you, including the Sodexo Discounts portal. Open to all, the site benefits colleagues to the tune of an average £670/€760 saving each year. Just by checking Sodexo Discounts first before making a purchase, you could save directly on the product, or earn rewards in the form of points that can benefit future purchases.
And, if you use the Sodexo Spree card, you can earn cash-back and reward points through specific retailers on Sodexo Discounts. Simply load your Spree card with money, then use it online or in-store at any of the 50+ retail partners, and you’ll receive cash-back the next time you top up. Spree partners include supermarkets and high street clothing retailers so the cash-back you earn is on money you would have spent anyway.
Managing those tricky issues
Did you know that as well as providing emotional wellbeing support and structured counselling, the Sodexo employee assistance programme, provided through Talk, can provide legal advice?
You'll find information online around challenging a parking ticket, buying a used car, wills and probate, powers of attorney, living in a leasehold property, and advice for tenants.
If you'd like to speak to someone for advice about a particular issue relating to legal or civil matters, call the EAP (UK: 0800 111 6387, ROI: 1800 551 556) and choose option one.
Dealing with debt
Debt is a common issue that many people face and can be the result of many different factors including redundancy, benefit changes, erratic spending, low income, family changes such as divorce, or ignoring bills. If you’re struggling with debt, feeling stressed, low or anxious is a normal response and can affect your self-esteem. It can trigger emotional distress and cause you to worry. The important thing is never ignore your debts - they will always get worse if you do. Remember, however much you owe, there is always a solution, so address the issue as soon as possible. Try to seek help as soon as you can and get independent expert advice which is freely available.
As well we the Legal and General financial wellbeing hub, you can seek information and financial help through the UK's Money Advice Service, or MABS in Ireland; independent services set up to offer free, unbiased advice to help people manage money and debt issues - however large or small.
Over the past six weeks, through this extended lockdown period, Make Yourself at Home has returned to focus on the areas that can impact wellbeing at this difficult time. We also asked you to tell us what you need to help better support positive wellbeing at Sodexo. Over 300 of you had your say, and next week, we’ll share the results with you all.
Until then, maybe take a look at that household list? Don't bury your head in the sand - there’s no problem you can’t overcome. And if you need help, your company and colleagues are here to support you. Just Talk.
