Wellbeing: let's keep the focus on you

With each area of our UK and Ireland region living with increased social restrictions to some degree, the most recent bout of ‘lockdowns’ may have been the hardest yet.

Many of our colleagues continued to head into the workplace to allow essential services to remain operational. Others extended their not-so-temporary stint of working from home, and many faced the challenge of balancing home schooling. We also saw colleagues in the UK placed on furlough; some for the first time.

From March to September last year, we ran the Make Yourself at Home series, designed to support colleague wellbeing, particularly for people who were no longer able to go into their office or site. This time, we focused on the mental and physical health of all colleagues – no matter what your experience was through ‘lockdown 3’:

In each of these articles, we asked you to tell us more about your experience, and what else you might need to support your wellbeing. Over 300 colleagues responded, so thanks to all who shared their insight. The main themes identified from the survey were:

  • The impact of the pandemic on Sodexo, and what that means for individuals and teams
  • The struggle of parents who are balancing home working with home schooling
  • The importance of wellbeing resources, and having an easy place to find them
  • The importance of providing recognition for teams and individuals for what they have achieved through the pandemic.

You’ll see that many of our topics in the Make Yourself at Home series directly addressed the themes reported by colleagues, but we recognise that there is always more we can do.

While the results of the survey show no surprises, and no-one has a single answer to the biggest question – what the future will look like - the regional wellbeing team is committed to ensuring that all areas are addressed, and the right level of support is made available.

For example, we received a number of suggestions from colleagues about the generation of activities and groups to promote wellbeing. We’re pleased to say that the central team is currently working through those suggestions, and once plans are in place, we will share all the details.

In the meantime, remember to make use of the wealth of wellbeing support available in a variety of places for all colleagues to use:

  • Talk page on Your_Sodexo, including information on:
    • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
    • Financial wellbeing
    • Ingenium wellbeing hub
  • New lockdown support page on both Your_Sodexo
    • This features external advice from reputable sources, as well as signposting to internal policies and procedures.
